Wakey! Wakey! flaunts upbeat tunes

Lacrymosa and the band Wakey! Wakey! performed at the Rat on Friday.

On Friday April 23, the Rathskeller resonated with the sounds of New York talent, which included solo artist Lacrymosa and the band Wakey! Wakey! Sponsored by College Union Board (CUB), the free concert drew a large crowd.

Fronted by pianist Michael Grubbs, who plays the character Grubbs on the CW’s “One Tree Hill,” Wakey! Wakey! proved that their stardom in the indie scene is well on the rise. The five-member band from Brooklyn consisted of Anne Lieberwith on the bass, Tanya Buziak on the Microkorg, Patrick Doane on the violin and Max Tucker on the drums. Although the band took their sound check very seriously, they followed it with a near-flawless set of upbeat songs that was interrupted with playful comments and humorous anecdotes. They played their biggest hit, “Brooklyn” which was also featured on the show “One Tree Hill.” However, their most impressive songs included an original called “Twenty-Two” and amazing renditions of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and Yeasayer’s indie smash, “Ambling Alp.”

Grubbs mentioned that the band intends on touring very soon, starting on the East Coast, heading to the Midwest and ending in Europe. He also commented that every Monday night at 9:30 p.m., Wakey! Wakey! performs a live set on their Facebook page. He said they always have prominent guests come on the show, and Jenny Owen Youngs is scheduled to appear as a guest in the near future.

Before Wakey! Wakey!, Lacrymosa, who is Caitlin Pasko, a recorded music major from New York University, played a menagerie of Regina Spektor-inspired songs on the piano. Her song “Spider Fingers” was as endearing and charming as her personality. In the middle of the song, she softly apologized for a mistake that nobody seemed to notice, explaining that the piano had less keys than she was used to.

As part of her senior project, she stated that she is required to make a second album under the labels Family Records & Timber Street, who produced her first album, as well as Wakey! Wakey!’s. She hopes it will be released in September.

When asked about the college and the Rathskeller she responded, “It’s very pretty. NYU doesn’t have a place like this.”
