Breaking: Born-again demonstrators ignite student protest

A pair of “born again” Christian demonstrators provoked student protest Wednesday afternoon when they spoke outside Brower Student Center, decrying the choices of college students, such as drinking and the “homosexual lifestyle.”

Two religious activists, who named themselves only as Greg and Robert, shouted slogans like “Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve” and engaged nearby students with intentionally-offensive statements.

Students responded by holding rainbow flags and signs advocating for marriage equality. At one point, three pairs of female students started kissing in front of Robert, who wielded a bible and periodically read from it amid chants from student protesters.

“I just got out of class and he was just spewing hate,” said Jessica Cortese, a junior English and women’s and gender studies major. “This should show people that they cannot come to our campus and start ranting hate-chants, we’ll do something about it.”

A few Campus Police officers were on hand but did not interfere. An officer at the scene said as long as the protests remained non-violent, officers would let them continue.

Does anyone know what church these bigots are from? I think I’d like to visit that establishment this Sunday.

  2. Rich says:

Finally, an escape from this liberal, Godless school. I too would like to know where these righteous men praise our Lord. If they or anyone who knows where I can worship with them is reading, please e-mail me at richdechoix@gmail.com.
    God Bless.

  3. Rachel says:

Our school is far from godless. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and many others live here harmoniously. People from these groups gathered together to speak against these men.

  4. Scott says:

If you have a problem with this “liberal, Godless school” why would you come here? Why would you apply and PAY to attend at a place you so desperately hate? AND you’re following our “liberal, Godless school” newspaper so closely, GET OUT OF HERE IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH US!

  5. Proud Parent of a Protester says:

Yessss! Suppress hate and bigotry. Zealots like these two are mentally ill. They are overcompensating for their own conflicting behaviors and feelings (guilt is usually a big one). Unfortunately. they target and hurt others and get attention in the process. Congratulations on a rapid and selfless response on the part of the protesters. BTW, Repent or Perish?! Were their “I’m With Stupid” t shirts in the wash?

  6. d_rock says:

    Couple of douchers.

  7. Gottlieber says:

Praise the LORD JESUS! These 2 devoted, selfless men bring great joy to our FATHER in Heaven.

  8. Will says:

I think it is awsome that someone cared enough to let them know they are going to hell and there is still a chance for repentence.
students that support gay marriage are sad and we should pray for there ignorance. the time to make a stand is when you are making the Godly choice. if were ment to be with the same sex why are there man and women ask your self’s that question. it is not a hate crime to let them know it is wrong and is an abomination in the lords eye’s, God Bless those preacher that had the courage to speak the truth. there will always be protest against right and wrong:

  9. Danni says:

What?! How is it that a book that some guy wrote is running people’s lives to the point where they literally hate other people? Just because there are men and women doesn’t mean that they have to love each other. It’s not wrong in any way shape or form – it’s an act of love. Isn’t that what religion is all about? Love and faith? How am I supposed to believe what these people are saying if they are going against their own word. What happened to God loving all of his creations? Did he not create me in your eyes? Do you think homosexuality is a choice? Why would someone just wake up and say “Gee, today I feel like having no rights, being hated, and having a higher risk of death today so I can kiss a girl.”? That makes no sense. People are all different – get over it. There is no reason anyone in this country should not have rights – especially because of religion. Separation of Church and State? I think not.

  10. Eric says:

if you have ever turned on a light, dialled a phone, cooked, written, watched tv, used a computer, or worked on a sunday, you’re going to hell.
if you’ve ever touched a woman while she’s menstruating, you’re going to hell. if you’re a woman who has menstruated for that matter, you’re going to hell.
if you’ve ever eaten pig or shellfish, you’re going to hell.

i could go on, but you get the point: do you believe these rules too? because they’re kinda part of the set that has the ‘no gays’ rule.

and if you think that religion doesn’t change, ask your parents about their faith when they were growing up. in catholicism for example, a generation ago, women weren’t allowed in a church without a veil covering their hair, you had to pray in latin, there were things like purgatory and limbo and you couldn’t eat meat on fridays. ever.
even further back, the church was a silent supporter of the holocaust and an active supporter of the slave trade.
even further back, priests were married men and the mass was done in someone’s home in greek.
religion changes, maybe you need to get with the times.

  11. BOB says:

The funny thing is when someone judges another and calls them a bigot. What standard do they use there own bigotry standard . Another thing that troubles me is when you hear i was born to be a homosexual . I cant help having anal sex . That is like someone saying i was born to be a serial killer a pyromaniac a rapist etc. This is a straight cop out. There is one standard a transcended standard and that is Gods standard . The creator of the universe gives you air in your lungs everyday . Stop shaking your fist at God . Your problem is not with the preachers they love you enough to tell you the truth . YOUR PROBLEM IS WITH GOD . Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,* nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God 1Cr 6:9,10

  12. Glenn says:

    Let’s protest “BOB”!

  13. Marlowe says:

Will, are you utterly unaware of the irony of the statement “should pray for there ignorance?” Should you be praying for ignorance over there? Or are you so ignorant you didn’t realize that the third person plural possessive in this language happens to be “their” not “there.” Honestly, I don’t mean to be a stickler but when you’re (that’s you’re as in a contraction meaning you are, not your as in the 2nd person possessive, get it?) talking about a group’s ignorance, particularly a group I count myself a member of, proofreading never hurt anyone. That being said, it is within those preacher’s first amendment rights to speak on campus, and it was within our rights to let them know (that’s “know” not “no”, paying attention William?) that we as a student body did not welcome them or wish to listen to them, which is precisely what we did.

  14. Pete says:

People like Bob, Will, and Rich make me glad that I’m Wiccan. I thank everyone that spoke out at the protest that day and the people speaking out on this site. It makes me happy to see people supporting tolerance over hatred. Blessed Be.

  15. Fairness4all says:

Even though you do not agree with these young men’s opinion and protests, they have as much rights as the GLTG groups to express them. Those of you who are condemning these men are just as guilty of “bigotry” as they are. Look inside yourself and know that your opinions might not be PC, BUT you are allowed to express them anyway. I am getting tired of only the politically correct are considered okay and the ones who do not go along with the crowds get shouted down.
Until these men blow up trade centers, give ‘em a break and let them voice their opinions along with the gay rights folks.
    Amen.

  16. Fairness4all says:

Support Tolerance, even if it’s not what you believe it. Goes both ways, Pete. Are you tolerant of those who do not share your beliefs??? Seems not.
