Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams claimed 9-0 victories against the Ithaca College Bombers on March 9 in what is quickly becoming a spring season to remember.
The men’s team, ranked No. 10 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Region, improved to a 6-0 record.
Lions junior Michael Klimchak bested his opponent, senior Colin Flynn 6-2, 6-1, bringing his singles record on the year to 12-2. Junior Roger Mosteller also won 6-2, 6-1 against his opponent, freshman Taylor Borda.
In doubles competition, Klimchak and Mosteller once again teamed up to post a strong 8-0 win over Ithaca’s top pair, Flynn and freshman Danny Wolk. The Lions’ top pair is now 6-0 this spring and ranked No. 13 in the region.
Junior Eric Ferriere posted his 13th singles victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles versus Ithaca’s Wolk.
The women’s team, ranked No. 29 in the nation, improved its record to 8-0. The Lions have now won 10 straight matches since last season.
At No. 1 singles, freshman Jackie Shtemberg defeated senior Erin Chapman 6-0, 6-0. The win improves Shtemberg’s singles record to 19-3 on the season. She is ranked No. 9 regionally in singles competition and is 7-0 in dual singles play.
Meanwhile at No. 2 singles, junior Cristina Contrafatto beat Ithaca junior Rachel Gunderson 6-2, 6-2.
“Everyone is very pumped,” Contrafatto said. “This is a huge match for us and we are excited for the outcome. We have all worked hard and are ready for hard competition.”
Shtemberg and Contrafatto teamed up at No. 1 doubles and defeated Chapman and sophomore Alyssa Jaffe 8-1, improving their record to 18-3. Shtemberg and Contrafatto are now ranked No. 3 in the region in doubles play.
The Lions travel to the University of Mary Washington in Virginia for their first road match of the season on March 25. The women start at 10:30 a.m. and the men start at 11 a.m.
