Men’s soccer in an early season slump

Aug. 29 – Virginia Wesleyan defeats College

The Lions lost their first game of the season to Virginia Wesleyan College (4-1), at the Joe Pombriant/Christopher Newport University Soccer Classic. Sophomore forward Mark Tribendis and senior forward Phil Neiland scored the first two goals of the game for the Blue Marlins to close out the first half with a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore forward Ryan McMann scored the only goal for the Lions, assisted by rookie midfielder Michael Ferber. The Blue Marlins scored two more goals and dominated on offense with nine shots on goal, while the Lions were only able to convert one of their six shots on goal.

Aug. 30 – Nazario nears 100th career win

Christopher Newport University (1-0-1) defeated the Lions (4-0) during the final game of the Joe Pombriant/Christopher Newport University Soccer Classic. Head coach George Nazario, in his ninth season at the College, was unable to capture his 99th career win. His overall record remained 98-53-14.

Sept. 5 – College falls to John Carroll University

The Lions (0-3) fell 1-0 to John Carroll University (2-0), while competing at Richard Stockton College’s Osprey Classic. John Carroll University’s sophomore Nick Burtscher converted a corner kick for the lone goal of the game against Lions junior goalie Shawn Mecchi, who had four saves throughout the 90-minute game.

Sept. 6 – Lions lose to Statesman in overtime

Hobart College (2-1) handed the Lions (0-4) their fourth straight loss of the season during their 2-1 overtime win. Nazario’s coaching record now stands at 98-55-14. He is just within reach of his 100th win this season. Statesman sophomore forward John Rosenbaum gave a 1-0 lead at the half. McMann tied the game for the Lions. The Lions remain 0-4 heading into this weeks games.
